Zeughauskeller
About This Spot
Stepping into Zeughauskeller is like entering a slice of Zürich’s living history. Nestled on the bustling Bahnhofstrasse, this Swiss restaurant unfolds within a grand space that has stood since the mid-15th century, its wooden beams and stone walls quietly echoing centuries of stories. Despite its size — a lively and expansive setting that hums with the energy of locals and visitors alike — there’s a comforting rhythm here, a place where time gently slows and conviviality takes center stage.
The atmosphere is warm and bustling without ever feeling rushed. Conversations blend with the clink of heavy steins, the hum of server footsteps, and the subtle spice of traditional Swiss cooking unfolding in the kitchen. Guests gather around long, communal tables or tucked into cozy corners, creating a collective experience that feels both timeless and immediate. It’s the kind of place where the pace invites you to savor not just the meal, but the moments shared over it.
Food at Zeughauskeller is an invitation to explore classic Swiss flavors through generous portions and familiar comforts. Imagine the rich, hearty aroma of pork schnitzel paired with golden rösti, or the delicate balance of a pumpkin soup warming your hands as much as your spirit. Desserts, like a house-special apple strudel or velvety Vacherin glacé, close the meal with gentle sweetness that lingers. Whether you sip on a local Esthauskeller beer or linger over a coupe vermicelles au kirsch, the culinary experience here is intertwined with the warmth of tradition and the joy of shared discovery.
Though popular and often busy, there is a friendly efficiency that keeps the flow steady without sacrificing personal care. The attentive staff quietly orchestrate the lively room, ensuring guests feel seen and at ease even on the busiest evenings. It’s a place where reservations are wise, yet serendipitous finds still happen, offering a taste of Zürich that’s as much about the place as the plate.
For those seeking a genuine sense of Swiss hospitality framed by rich history and hearty, authentic fare, Zeughauskeller offers a genuine local experience — one where the past and present quietly converse through food, laughter, and the clinking of glasses.

One of two, the best places I've eaten. The old build was absolutely amazing shape for the age, it was incredible. The food was great. Also had great service which is something considering its Switzerland, which is not known for being overly friendly. I was told by a friend who had been there in the 70's and to try the pork knuckle- why change something that's almost perfect I guess.

Typical Swiss restaurant, very big but very crowded. Highly recommend to book in advance. Reasonable prices for Swiss standards. We ordered assorted sausages with potato salad and onion sauce, and a schnitzel. Both were very tasty.

Food and service are really amazing! It is very expensive, but I still think it is worth it if you are in Zürich. You’ll have great food and a great experience in this restaurant with the environment and everything. I recommend booking in advance (a month before if you want to go for Friday or Saturday dinner) as you might end up waiting in the line for a long time.

Lovely place. Extremely busy. Huge restaurant with a staff of circa 80. The front of house team were brilliant. Definitely worth booking although it was a lucky tourist find. The food was excellent. The service was outstanding. The building was old and had been around since 1450+/- which is impressive. Generous time at the table. Beer was great. The 1L glasses are heavy when full .

This was such a great place to eat. The food was delicious. The staff was very friendly, and the inside of the restaurant is interesting. I do recommend a reservation as we had to wait in line to be seated, and we were seated at a table split with another party of two (which was fine for us, but isn’t for everyone). I did also overhear from another group that bigger parties cannot always be seated without a reservation during their peak dinner time, roughly 6-8pm.

This place felt authentic and is set in such a beautiful building. Incredibly busy so we'll worth booking a table ahead if you can. The staff were all friendly and service was extremely quick and the food was honestly amazing. We had a schnitzel and a mushroom meal dish (cant remember the name) but honestly so so good!

I visited this restaurant three times during my stay, both for lunch and dinner and everything I tried was fantastic! - Pumpkin Soup: One of the best I’ve ever had , light, interesting, and full of flavor. - Chicken Schnitzel with Mushroom Sauce: Perfectly thin and crispy on the outside, juicy inside. The sauce was creamy with a hint of lemon, absolutely delicious! - Rösti: Good but a bit dry for my liking. - Macaroni from their vegetarian options: Made with cheese, potatoes, and caramelized onions. light, comforting, and so good! The atmosphere is super charming, full of character and history. If you’re in a small group, you’ll likely share a table with others, which actually makes it more fun! We ended up having great conversations with our table neighbors :) Can’t wait to come back!

Tried the Autumn platter and really enjoyed it. The place has a very typical German and Swiss flair, rustic and authentic, which adds a lot to the experience. The food was very good. The vol au vent and mushroom ragout were especially tasty, and all the vegetarian components were well cooked and well balanced. Comforting, hearty food done right. Service was good and attentive despite how busy the restaurant gets. The place is clearly very popular and well attended. Because of the crowd, you may end up sharing tables with other guests. It turns into a kind of communal dining experience, which actually feels quite nice and lively rather than uncomfortable. Overall, a great spot for traditional food, authentic atmosphere, and a classic Zurich dining experience. Definitely worth visiting if you want something local and filling.
